Introduction

The London Book Fair – more widely known under its abbreviation, LBF – exists as a competitive market for the negotiation of rights. Although it’s a book fair at heart, this is where authors and agents are able to make sales of their rights for the distribution of content and adaptation across films, digital media, audio and television shows. The first edition was held back in 1971 and it’s almost 50-year history, LBF has managed to position itself as an integral marketplace within the entertainment ecology and it’s where most of the biggest deals are negotiated. It’s also a place to discover the hottest book titles that everyone will be talking about and a place to showcase up-and-coming authors. Companies partake at LBF to maintain their competitive edge and build on professional buzz and brand recognition.

Logistics

LBF is an annual trade fair that’s brought by Reed Exhibitions Ltd. UK. Editions usually run during the first quarter of the year, falling somewhere during March, and proceedings last for a total of three days. The London Book Fair enjoys the generous support of the Booksellers Association of Great Britain & Ireland, which helps organise the event in London, UK.

The book fair happens at the Olympia centre and is open to professional visitors only. The working hours are from 09:00 am in the morning until 18:30 pm with the only exception being the last day, which closes at 17:00 pm. Olympia London exhibition centre is positioned right next Kensington railway station, which is a major transportation hub. You can catch an Overground line, underground lines and a main railway service.

What You Can Expect as an Exhibitor

This ensures you get to meet with only relevant trade visitors and establish beneficial business relationships;
  • The reputation that LBF has built for itself in the past four decades has ensured that you only get to meet the top performers in the industry from the best editors from the biggest publishers to established agents and high-profile buyers – exactly the levels of publicity you want to capitalize on;
  • You are also in a position where you can dig into the market forces at hand thanks to the first-class support program, which extends to a variety of conferences like the Research & Scholarly Publishing Forum, What Works? Education Conference & The Writers’ Summit @ LBF.

Audience & Statistics

Let’s move onto what’s most important – the numbers. Just how much of a big deal is the LBF? We want to say quite the big deal, because last edition saw over 1700 exhibitors from 60 countries and the audience soared to 25,000 trade visitors from 135 countries. The division between foreign and national visitors is fairly down the middle as a little over 13,000 trade visitors are not from the UK. There were also 620 rights table holders.

Exhibitors were made from giant houses to the smallest independent, publishers of blockbuster novels and academic texts, producers of children’s books and graphic novels, mobile companies and gaming start-ups. The audience is built from the variety of creators invested in the industry from authors and editors to illustrators and translators. On the business end, there’s talent scouts, marketing folk, agents, distributors, buyers and sellers.
