Exhibitions in Austria for Environment & Waste

Austria has created and effective blueprint for modern, efficient strategies within the environment and waste management for other European countries to follow. The country has achieved massive successes in recycling and waste collection, which are supported by both government initiatives and widespread public participation. According to a Euro-barometer survey, 96% of Austrians claim to separate their general waste from packaging, and 99% take measures to separate paper from other waste. This collective effort results in Austrian households sorting over a million tonnes of recyclables every year. The country’s robust recycling system is financed through municipal taxes and operates under a producer responsibility model. Altstoff Recycling Austria (ARA), the largest company running this system, provides a pick-up service for 1.6 million households and maintains public drop-off points for various types of recyclables. Austria’s legislative framework for waste management is stringent with a blanket ban on certain types of waste going to landfill. Products with a total organic carbon emission rate of more than 5% are prohibited from being disposed of in landfills, effectively preventing packaging waste from contaminating the soil. In addition, Austria implemented a ban on plastic bags starting January 1, 2020. The recycling system in Austria is meticulously organized. Waste is sorted into several categories: organic waste, waste paper, and plastic packaging, with metal packaging and glass (sorted by color) being collected separately. Hazardous materials such as batteries have their own designated collection points, while other waste is placed in black residual waste bins. Electric garbage trucks collect waste across the country. Vienna exemplifies this high level of organization with a well-coordinated color-coded recycling bin system for both street bins and household waste. It’s this system that forms the backbone of the environment and waste management industry in Austria and turns it into an example for the rest of Europe.
