Geneva is well on its way to become an internationally regarded centre for the jewelry auction as news broke that Phillips, the renowned auction house, has announced a significant addition to its jewelry auction calendar by including Geneva as a prime location for high-profile jewelry sales. This strategic move, described by the house’s chief executive Stephen Brooks as a “statement of strategic intent,” emphasizes on Geneva’s growing prominence in the global jewelry market. Phillips held its first jewelry auction in Geneva in November 2023 with plans for biannual events in May and November. These dates coincide with important trade shows and other jewelry auctions, mirroring the rhythm of Fashion Weeks in style capitals. This expansion into Geneva follows Phillips’ successful jewelry auctions in Hong Kong and New York, indicating the auction house’s ambition to establish a significant global presence. Recent auction successes have further validated Geneva’s appeal as a jewelry auction destination. Notable sales include a collection of jewelry from the estate of architect Earl Simcox Swensson and his wife, Suzanne D. Swensson, fetching $1.15 million in June, and a 118.5-carat sapphire and diamond necklace by Bulgari selling for $3.42 million in May. In addition to auctions, Geneva is also becoming a focal point for luxury jewelry trade shows. The Haute Jewels Geneva trade show features a lineup of esteemed exhibitors across two prestigious locations: the Fairmont Grand Hotel and the InterContinental Hotel. With 38 brands showcasing their collections, including 17 new additions, the event promises to solidify Geneva's position as a key player in the jewelry industry calendar. Michael Hakimian, the founder of Haute Jewels Geneva, expressed delight in welcoming the expanded roster of exhibitors. With brands like Annamaria Cammilli, Roberto Coin, and Dolce & Gabbana among others, the trade show offers a platform for both established names and emerging talents.
