The Zurich financial centre stands tall as a cornerstone of the nation's economic prowess. The city, with its impressive concentration of major banks and insurance giants, serves as the pulse of this financial powerhouse and shapes not only the local economy but also contributes significantly to the broader Swiss financial realm. In the midst of global climate ambitions and sustainable development goals, the spotlight in Zurich has turned to sustainable finance. As nations align with the Paris Climate Goals as well as the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Zurich’s financial hub naturally comes to the forefront as a key player on an international level, which results in positioning Switzerland as a global leader in sustainable finance. The Zurich financial centre, encompassing the cantons of Zurich, Schwyz and Zug, stands as the largest financial hub in Switzerland. Boasting 97,300 full-time jobs, it generated a substantial gross value added of CHF 29.9 billion in 2021. These figures prove just how central Zurich is to the Swiss financial narrative. The region is home to 42% of jobs and contributes 45% of the gross value added for the entire Swiss finance industry. The financial sector remains a linchpin in the Zurich region’s economic tapestry. In 2021, Zurich’s financial entities contributed to one in ten jobs and a remarkable 16% of the regional economic output. As a catalyst for economic dynamism, the financial sector in Zurich showcased resilience, notably during the challenging pandemic years of 2020 and 2021. It managed to provide stability when many other sectors faced constraints. In the evolving landscape of sustainable finance, Zurich stands first in line as it steers the narrative towards a more environmentally conscious and socially responsible future. As the financial sector continues to thrive, Zurich remains a beacon of economic strength, resilience and sustainability on the global stage.
