Inter Tabac and Covid-19

With government shutdowns and other restrictions, organisers saw it fit to cancel Inter Tabac 2020 and move the next physical edition to September 2022. The new dates are from September 15th to September 17th and the location is as always Messe Dortmund. The exhibition grounds will follow strict coronavirus protective measures and sanitation protocols. Safety precautions such as social distancing rules, a 3G entry regulation, and venue seating rearrangements will be among the implemented measures. Participants must show documents such as negative test results, proof of recovery, or vaccination passports before entering the fair. At all times, they must maintain a social distance of 1.5 meters.

Active since 1978, Inter Tabac (sometimes written as InterTabac) has positioned itself as the first choice for the tobacco industry and a global leader. This international trade fair has become the most important meeting platform for all industry players in the tobacco and smoking sector.

You’re in for busy three days, where you’re able to garner industry publicity and meet with high-calibre buyers. The product portfolio extends to smokers need articles, smokeless tobacco, cigarettes, cigarillos, cigars, tobacco, paper products, pipes and loading facilities. It needs to be said Inter Tabac also embraces the latest in technology with space designated to vaping supplies, flavour strips and 3D-printed pipes.

Dortmund, Germany serves as host to Inter Tabac every single year in the second half of September and editions usually last for a total of three days. The official organiser for the event is the famous VILLIGER Group, the Swiss tobacco company that’s been in business since 1888 and has grown its number of operations to 70 countries, and exhibitors showcase at Messe Dortmund.

Doors are open to professional visitors over the age of 18 and working hours are from 10:00 am until 18:00 pm. The only exception is the last day, which closes at 17:00 pm in the afternoon. If you’re not in a car or using the railway system, there are several public transport options. You can take the U45 or U42 underground train lines to where you’re staying.

What Are People Saying?

“German participants primarily included classic tobacconists. The interest in new topics & trends and the personal exchange of information prevailed as usual. That is not surprising because only InterTabac gives retailers and wholesalers the opportunity of exploring and testing the product width,” - Sabine Loos, CEO of Westfalenhallen Unternehmensgruppe GmbH;

“Year after year, InterTabac expands its reputation as the world’s flagship trade fair of the tobacco industry and as the meeting place of the tobacco family. And that applies again this year. The trade must overcome many challenges in the future.” - Thomas Schäfer, Managing Director of the Tobacco Trade Association of North Rhine Westphalia;

“InterTabac has once again given the retail sector an overview of all segments of the national and international tobacco world. It continues to be an indispensable dialogue, information and order placement platform, especially for tobacconists.” - Steffen Kahnt, Director of the German Association of Tobacconists.

Audience & Statistics

Inter Tabac is organised with the generous support of several major German associations within the industry, but the biggest of them all is the Landesfachverband Tabak, translating to the German Tobacco Association. It’s this institutional support that has given the event a stable growth over the intervening years, which has culminated with last edition’s 520 exhibitors and 13,800 trade visitors.

Outside Germany, the countries with highest numbers of visitors include the Netherlands, Italy, France, Belgium, Bulgaria and Spain. But the geographic reach of Inter Tabac far surpasses Europe and stretches to markets in North and South America, Asia and even Africa. A breakdown in professional background reveals tobacconists, wholesalers and retailers from and employees of the tobacco industry worldwide.
