Art Basel and Covid-19

Art Basel 2023 will take place at Messe Basel in June. The dates span the period between June 15th – June 18th, 2023. Due to Switzerland's improved epidemiological situation, the nation has removed its Covid-19 national restrictions as well as its travel limitations. Subsequently, Messe Basel will not feature strict coronavirus safety measures such as the 3G entry policy. Attendees will be encouraged to follow recommendations such as avoiding shaking hands and partaking in paper exchanges. Furthermore, participants will be encouraged to perform regular handwashing and conduct proper sneezing/coughing etiquette (sneezing/coughing in the crook of their arms).

Logistics

This international trade fair has been celebrating art and antiques from the 20th and 21st century since 1970 every year in June in Basel, Switzerland. Editions are put together by the MCH Messe Schweiz (Basel) AG and last for a total of four days. Messe Basel opens doors to visitors from 11:00 in the morning until 07:00 in the afternoon with the fourth day being the exception, where closing time is scheduled one hour earlier.

Past Editions

2021 Edition

The 2021 edition of Art Basel was among the first international art exhibitions to occur since the onset of the pandemic. It took place as a hybrid event from September 24, 2021, to September 26, 2021. Art Basel 2021 consisted of a face-to-face exhibition and the digital platform Art Basel Live. The digital platform allowed participating galleries to reach a larger audience and visitors to take part remotely. Virtual tours and online showrooms were part of the platform. The face-to-face exhibition included strict COVID-19 precautions such as social distance and took place in Messe Basel. The edition was considered a success due to high participation numbers and strong sales across all levels of the market. A total of 60,000 visitors participated in the fair, alongside 272 galleries from 33 countries. The exhibitors included 24 newcomer galleries from cities such as London, Hong Kong and others.

2022 Edition

Art Basel 2022 also occurred as a hybrid event. The edition, held between 16.06.2022 and 19.06.2022, consisted of the digital platform Art Basel Live and a face-to-face art fair in Messe Basel. The venue that hosted the live aspect of the event did not feature strict Covid-19 safety protocols due to the country removing its restrictions in April 2022. The overall attendance of Art Basel 2022 reached 70,000 attendees, which included 270 returning exhibitors, 19 newcomer ones, 46 speakers and over 300 museums and institutions. The exhibiting galleries represented 40 countries and six continents.
