Exhibitions in Portugal for Internet

The Internet services industry in Portugal ranks among the most developed Internet markets in the whole of Europe and has made significant progress in increased broadband adoption and improvements in network infrastructure. As of 2022, domestic Internet services reached 88% of households, while mobile Internet use reached a rate of 81.8%. Mobile Internet use spans a wide age range with the youngest at age 16 and the oldest at 74. These advancements, while positive, create a delicate situation for Portugal, which has to balance out its goal to close the gap with other European nations and fully integrate next-generation technologies such as 5G. Portugal’s broadband infrastructure demonstrates stable growth, earning the country 18th place (out of 27 EU member countries) in connectivity in the 2022 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI). Portugal’s broadband adoption has increased from 75% in 2019 to 81% in 2021, slightly exceeding the EU average of 78%. Of particular note is the significant uptick in high-speed internet connections. The share of broadband connections offering speeds of at least 100 Mbps rose from 56% in 2019 to 68% in 2021. Portugal’s Internet services industry has also excelled in expanding access to Very High Capacity Networks (VHCN) and Fiber to the Premises (FTTP). As of 2021, VHCN and FTTP coverage extended to 91% and 88% of households, respectively, surpassing EU averages of 70% and 50%. These performance indicators chart a promising growth trajectory that hinges on the continual improvement of digital infrastructure, especially in urban and suburban areas. The fixed broadband market in Portugal is chiefly divided among three operators: Altice-MEO, NOS, and Vodafone, which collectively account for nearly 97% of the market. This concentration has kicked off intense competition for the lion’s share of the market, and these efforts largely fall in the bundled services sector.
