Germany’s Internet services industry has pulled ahead over the last decade, gaining a larger share of the country’s GDP, and has mostly weathered the COVID-19 pandemic without catastrophic losses. The sector, which contributed 4.2% to Germany's GDP in 2019, is projected to rise to 7% by 2025. One of the key trends in Germany’s Internet services industry is the rapid increase in data traffic. Since 2015, mobile data usage per SIM card has grown by nearly 50% annually, while data consumption per fixed network connection has expanded by around 37% each year. This increase was further amplified by the pandemic, as work-from-home setups and social distancing measures drove higher Internet usage across the board. In the first quarter of 2020 alone, data usage spiked and surpassed the growth rate seen for the entire year of 2019. The pandemic accelerated the adoption of digital services, making the Internet indispensable in both personal and professional spheres. With lockdowns and remote work becoming the new normal, internet infrastructure became a lifeline for businesses, education, and entertainment. However, despite the increased reliance on digital services, the internet industry in Germany was not immune to the economic challenges posed by COVID-19. In 2020, Germany’s Internet industry faced a 1.2% contraction in revenue due to broader macroeconomic conditions. The uncertainty surrounding consumer behaviour, coupled with restrictions across various sectors, dampened growth in some parts of the internet services market. Enablers, transaction services, and digital advertising were among the segments hit hardest by the downturn. However, industry experts expect a recovery starting between 2021 and 2022, with long-term positive effects in several areas. As the global economy gradually stabilises, Germany's internet services sector is projected to rebound and continue its upward trajectory, benefiting from heightened demand for digital infrastructure and services.
