Germany’s graphic design industry has highly diversified over the years and established active hubs with their own unique personalities. Berlin, the beating heart of arts and culture in the country, has played a big role in the storied history of German graphic design. The city’s international flavor has given rise to unique design approaches, exemplified by studios like Eps51. Co-founded by Ben Wittner, Eps51 specializes in bilingual design, which reflects the multicultural environment of the capital. Wittner attributes their distinct visual style to Berlin’s diverse influences and the founders' international backgrounds. Their portfolio boasts collaborations with global giants such as Nike, L’Oreal, and Heineken, with a notable emphasis on editorial work. A key aspect of Berlin’s graphic design scene is its thriving poster culture. Outside the international hub of Berlin, regions like Bavaria offer a different but equally compelling design narrative. Anakin, a 20-year-old studio based in Bavaria, banks on a blend of tradition and technology. Co-founder Hans Wembacher emphasizes the value of craftsmanship in their process. The studio’s approach involves creating hand-made mock-ups and prototypes during the development stage, which results in visual identities that are both tactile and digitally refined. Anakin’s portfolio includes work for international brands like Apple, Red Bull, and BMW, as well as local Bavarian companies. This dual focus allows them to maintain a connection to their roots while leveraging modern design techniques. Their work spans from product design, such as innovative leather goods and futuristic tables, to traditional print materials, all characterized by a unique blend of old-world craftsmanship and contemporary aesthetics. Germany’s graphic design industry is marked by its ability to fuse historical influences with cutting-edge trends. The legacy of using design for propaganda during darker periods of history, like the Nazi occupation, contrasts sharply with today's emphasis on creativity, inclusivity, and international collaboration.
