Germany’s spa industry is more than thriving. Just look at the numbers for 2023; a market value of $8.79 billion, and a CAGR of 2.7% since 2018. As one of Europe’s leading spa destinations, Germany accounts for 21.5% of the region’s total market share, and keeps spa seekers coming back with its diverse range of spa offerings from luxury wellness retreats to medical spas covered under the country’s healthcare system. Germany’s deep-rooted spa culture dates back to the Roman Empire when returning soldiers sought hydrotherapy for recovery. The term spa itself is derived from the Latin acronym sanus per aquam, meaning health by water. Today, this tradition continues in the form of Germany’s Heilbäder (healing baths) and Kurorte (cure resorts), which meet strict air and water quality standards. Many of these locations, such as Bad Soden and Bad Kissingen, have become renowned for their therapeutic mineral springs and medical wellness programs. Among the different types of spas, day/club/salon spas lead the market, generating $3.76 billion in revenue in 2023 and accounting for 42.8% of the industry’s total value. These facilities offer accessible, short-term wellness experiences, catering to urban professionals and tourists alike. The rise in interest for quick rejuvenation treatments such as facials, massages, and hydrotherapy has contributed to this segment’s dominance. One of the most unique aspects of Germany’s spa industry is its integration with the national healthcare system. Residents with German health insurance may qualify for a state-subsidized medical “cure” (Kur), a three-week regimen prescribed by a physician to treat conditions such as musculoskeletal disorders and respiratory ailments. This approach reflects Germany’s emphasis on preventive healthcare and holistic well-being. The spa industry in Germany is also evolving to meet new consumer demands. Wellness tourism is on the rise, with visitors seeking immersive retreats that combine traditional spa therapies with modern treatments.
