Specialising in services such as window and façade cleaning, surface disinfection, and the maintenance of complex systems like sewage treatment plants, the industry is on the path to recovery, though the way forward might not be a straightforward upward trajectory. Between 2019 and 2024, the sector experienced a steady annual growth rate of 2.2%. However, turnover in 2024 is projected to reach €5.5 billion, which marks only a slight increase of 0.6% compared to the previous year. This subdued growth can be attributed to the aftermath of the pandemic, which saw a contraction in the number of potential corporate clients and an increased shift of cleaning contracts to facility management companies outside the industry. The sector’s clientele is diverse, ranging from private individuals and public institutions to companies in manufacturing, catering, and pharmaceuticals. Despite this variety, the lingering economic impacts of the pandemic have resulted in reduced spending willingness among many businesses. This has translated into diminished demand for specialised cleaning services, compounded by a still lower number of companies compared to pre-crisis levels. One notable exception is the healthcare sector, which is anticipated to see growth in outsourcing cleaning and disinfection services. This sector’s increased reliance on external service providers is driven by heightened hygiene standards and an ongoing recovery from the pandemic's effects. There’s also rising construction activity, particularly in urban areas with tall residential and office buildings, which is positively impacting the demand for specialist cleaning services. Increased urbanisation and the development of high-rise buildings are contributing to a higher need for professional cleaning solutions, ultimately translating to the industry’s sales growth.
