Germany's entertainment and media industry sees major upheavals at the tail end of the COVID-19 pandemic as it ushered in the complete domination of streaming platforms, which has been an industry-wide phenomenon. Digital streaming in Germany had been well on the rise, and the pandemic only accelerated this process. Lockdowns left viewers with nothing to do, while cinemas shut down, so they rushed to streaming platforms for their content needs. Enter the boom of online entertainment offered by Amazon Prime, Netflix, and Disney+. Now that audiences were primed, it gave rise to German and internationally co-produced streaming services, which ran in opposition to the media giants of the day. This major trend led to significant other changes. One being, the change in viewing habits. Yes, television remains a popular medium in Germany, with a significant portion of the population tuning in daily. However, the streaming services impacted traditional television viewership to the point traditional broadcasters face increasing competition for audience attention. We’re also seeing the decline in traditional media formats such as DVDs and movie theaters have witnessed a steady decline in popularity since 2015. Increasingly, Germans are opting for online streaming services over physical media and cinema experiences. The convenience, accessibility, and extensive content libraries offered by streaming platforms have contributed to this shift away from traditional formats. Despite efforts to promote local content, American productions continue to dominate Germany’s entertainment market. English-language films and series, especially those produced in the US, enjoy widespread popularity among German audiences. In 2022, the majority of the top-grossing films in Germany were American productions, reflecting the strong influence of Hollywood on the country's entertainment preferences. While dubbed foreign language content remains prevalent in Germany, there is a growing trend among younger audiences towards consuming content in its original language, particularly English.
