The German yachting industry has officially entered a period of stabilization and even growth, following the shaky period surrounding the pandemic. According to the German Boat and Ship Building Association (DBSV), the outlook for the industry is positive and trade figures have been encouraging. The DBSV, representing 420 companies across various sectors of the yachting industry, including superyacht builders, large series-built yacht constructors, and small wooden boat builders, reveals promising insights. Import figures from the Federal Statistics Office show a remarkable uptick with imports of motor boats and sailing boats surging by over 22% year-on-year. This reflects a robust recovery in the German boat building sector as Germans rekindled their love of open waters. Connection to nature has sparked interest in leisure boating. Exports of boats and yachts paint a similarly promising picture with a notable increase in both volume and value. The export of large motor yachts witnessed a rise of over 900%, driven by the delivery of several superyachts. Meanwhile, sales of sailing yachts in the 7.5 to 12-meter class also shot up, demonstrating growing international demand for German craftsmanship. Even in the small boats sectors, signs of recovery are evident. While imported small boat numbers saw a modest increase, German boat builders experienced a nearly 10% uptick in exports. DBSV Managing Director Claus-Ehlert Meyer expresses confidence in the industry’s revival and cited positive expectations among accessories manufacturers and wholesalers as well. The upbeat sentiment extends to the 51st hanseboot, Germany’s premier boat show, boasting a 5% increase in exhibitors and showcasing a plethora of new developments and boat premieres. Despite the challenges of the past, stability reigns in pricing, with a significant majority of association members opting to maintain or even reduce prices. This steadfastness reflects a concerted effort to ensure accessibility and affordability within the industry.
