Gems are intricately connected to the history of Germany and the gems industry is chiefly located in the historic region of Idar-Oberstein and more specifically the medieval town of Herrstein. Sitting in the EdelSteinLand or Gemstone Country, this area offers a paradise for gem hunters. From rare minerals to famous fossil digging sites, the EdelSteinLand has a wide array of attractions that captivate visitors from around the globe. One of the highlights of the region is the German Gemstone Road, which winds its way through the EdelSteinLand, connecting areas known for their rich history of gemstone processing. Spanning 48 kilometers through the stunning Hunsrück-Nahe area, this scenic route takes you on a journey away from the busy city streets and gives you an in-depth exploration of the traditional agate and gemstone crafts that have long been an integral part of the local economy. The German Gemstone Road serves as a pathway into the world of gemstones. Along the way, visitors can explore sights associated with mining and processing gemstones, gaining insights into centuries-old traditions that continue to thrive in modern times. Gems are integral to the culture of the region as well. For instance, since 1976, the Association Förderverein Deutsche Edelsteinstraße e.V. has been celebrating the German Gemstone Queen every two years, honoring individuals who embody the spirit of the region’s gemstone industry. The German Gemstone Queen serves as an ambassador for the Association, promoting the unique characteristics of the region’s gemstones and jewelry on both national and international platforms. From festivals to trade fairs, exhibition openings to gala evenings, the German Gemstone Queen’s duties are diverse and far-reaching. With appearances ranging from regional events to international trips, the German Gemstone Queen plays a vital role in showcasing the rich cultural heritage and economic significance of Germany’s gemstone industry.
