China’s solid waste recycling industry is experiencing a period of sustained growth Despite a recent slowdown in the nation's overall economic expansion, the recycling sector is projected to see its revenue increase at an annualized rate of 8.5% over the five years leading up to 2023, reaching $27.2 billion. The industry's growth is largely attributed to the rising volumes of solid waste from both household and industrial sectors, a direct consequence of China's rapid economic development over the past decade. This increase in waste, coupled with the growing complexity of waste streams, has necessitated the expansion and modernization of recycling infrastructure and technologies. The Chinese government has integrated comprehensive resource utilization into its ecological civilization framework. Through continuous improvements in regulations and technologies, the government has promoted resource utilization, achieving a bulk solid waste utilization rate of 55.0% by the end of 2019, a 5.0% increase from 2015. Notably, utilization rates for specific waste streams, such as gangue, fly ash, industrial by-product gypsum, and straw, have reached impressive levels. Looking ahead, China’s recycling industry is forecast to grow at an annualized rate of 6.0% over the next five years, reaching $36.3 billion by 2028. Continued urbanization and a heightened emphasis on environmental protection and resource reclamation are expected to remain key drivers of growth. Several key trends are shaping the Chinese recycling industry. For one, increased environmental awareness among consumers is driving demand for sustainable waste management solutions. The growth of heavy industries, rising household waste volumes, and the increasing number of automobiles are also contributing to the industry's expansion. The industry primarily focuses on recycling solid waste from businesses and households, processing it for reuse and selling it to manufacturers and constructors. Companies operating within the sector are concentrated in East and South China.
