As global environmental concerns grow, governments and industries are setting ambitious new recycling and waste reduction targets to combat the mounting waste crisis. Cities across the United States, including San Diego, Washington, D.C., Phoenix, New York, Seattle, and Boise, have either implemented or are considering stricter recycling regulations to encourage waste reduction. These measures aim to address the increasing pressure on landfills and the heightened awareness among residents about sustainable waste management. However, the recycling industry is still grappling with the effects of China’s ‘National Sword’ policy, introduced in early 2018. The policy banned the import of several types of plastic and other recyclable materials, leading to significant disruptions in global recycling supply chains. As a result, many nations, including the United States, have faced challenges in processing recyclable waste, leading to increased landfill use. In response, technological advancements and new processing techniques are being explored to create cleaner and more efficient recycling streams. The long-term success of these adaptations remains uncertain, but the industry is under pressure to innovate and establish self-sufficient recycling systems. These challenges aside, the US has made significant strides in recycling rates over the decades. In 1960, only 7% of waste was recycled or diverted, whereas today, nearly 35% of waste is successfully managed. While this represents a substantial improvement, there is still room for progress. Contamination of recyclable materials remains a major issue, as many consumers unknowingly dispose of non-recyclable or improperly prepared items in recycling bins. Additionally, the average American generates 4.9 pounds of waste per day, a figure that continues to rise, emphasizing the need for further waste reduction initiatives. Understanding the recyclability and environmental impact of different products is crucial. For example, donating or reusing a car can prevent 8,811 pounds of CO2 emissions compared to manufacturing a new vehicle.
