The global perfume industry registered considerable increase in revenue as the market grew from $64.4 billion in 2023 to $68.9 billion by the end of 2024. Social media platforms such as TikTok have been one of the main contributors to the industry’s growth, with #perfumetok accumulating over 5.2 billion views as consumers eagerly discuss and discover new scents. Consumers are more engaged with the world of fragrances than ever, but what is in? One of the most notable trends is the continued dominance of gourmand scents. Traditionally inspired by sweets like vanilla, caramel and chocolate, these fragrances have evolved into a sophisticated category that appeals to younger consumers looking for indulgent and “edible” notes. Jessica Matlin, director of home and beauty at luxury e-retailer Moda Operandi, notes how brands are increasingly experimenting with gourmand fragrances to cater to demand. Online search data supports this shift, with Spate, a trend-forecasting agency, reporting significant increases in searches for caramel perfumes and vanilla-based scents over the past year. The trend is expected to continue into 2025, with a focus on “neo” gourmands—sophisticated, complex interpretations that extend beyond traditional dessert-inspired notes. In this category, we find more complicated culinary influences as perfumes are incorporating elements inspired by popular food and drink experiences. We’re talking about scents that remind of creamy matcha lattes, freshly baked croissants, and even savory dishes like pho and pizza. Might seem surprising but these fragrances are making their way into the high-end perfumery industry. This expansion reflects a broader trend in which scent experiences mirror the multisensory appeal of food culture. Beyond gourmand notes, industry experts are focusing on advancements in fragrance longevity. Perfume wearers have long sought formulas that maintain their scent throughout the day. Perfumers are also working with innovative molecules to enhance and refine beloved fragrance notes.
