The pandemic might have shut down several industries, but the gardening industry flourished as people had to spend prolonged periods of time at home, which turned their attention to gardening as a way to manage mental and physical health. This trend has been best felt in developed markets, where households have been investing more in their outdoor spaces amidst the hybrid work era. Emerging markets are not far behind as they observe a large spike in gardening activity. Examining the dynamics between compost and grass care provides valuable insights into evolving spending patterns and priorities within gardening. One noticeable shift is the gradual sacrifice of lawn space in favor of other needs. The demand for lawn mowers, a key indicator of this trend, has exhibited a steady decline over the years with households opting for alternative uses of outdoor space such as paving, decking or storage sheds. The rise of outdoor furniture and storage, evident in a 5% growth spike in 2020, supports this shift. While this spike may have been influenced by pandemic-related factors, the long-term trend suggests a sustained change in how individuals utilize their garden space. One of the most significant shifts in gardening attitudes has been the growing popularity of grow-your-own food initiatives. Fueled by concerns over food security, health and sustainability, more households are turning to gardening as a means of growing their own fresh produce. This trend, which gained momentum during the pandemic, shows no signs of abating with growth continuing well into the hybrid working period. The increasing demand for compost is another indicator of this. As more households embrace gardening, there is a greater need for additional planting beds and containers. This shift not only reflects changing consumer preferences but also speaks to the broader societal shift towards sustainability and self-sufficiency.
