The equine industry in Lyon has long been a major contributor to the local economy, supporting France’s long-standing traditions with horses. The city fulfills this role as the host of Equita Lyon - an annual event that’s long been a staple in Lyon’s cultural and sporting calendar as it offers a truly unique blend of high-level international show jumping and equestrian performances that highlight the world’s rich equestrian heritage. The audience is a mix of horse breeders, equestrians and casual visitors, all of whom are equally enchanted by the Sport & Spectacle evenings, held on the Friday and Saturday of the event. These sessions, which attract over 7,000 spectators per night, showcase the world’s top show jumpers alongside curated performances that celebrate equestrian traditions from around the world. The 2023 production, titled Feria, took the audience on a journey to the Mediterranean, with a homage to Andalusian and Camargue traditions. Under the direction of Denis Marques, artistic director of the Andalusian equestrian ballet Alma Vaquera, the audience was treated to a spectacular display of garrochas (traditional long poles) and the flamencas in croup, a thrilling carousel featuring horses and riders performing in unison. In addition to showcasing equestrian traditions, Longines Equita Lyon is known for blending live music with its performances, creating an immersive experience for the audience. This year, the event featured a special performance by Les Gypsies Heritage, the descendants of the iconic Gipsy Kings. Six guitarists, along with a percussionist and bassist, filled the arena with gypsy music, accompanying the equestrian displays in a fusion of art and sport. Les Gypsies Heritage, led by the children of Chico and the Gipsy Kings, paid homage to their musical roots while also performing original compositions. Their performance created an atmosphere of celebration and joy, and put the fun in the horses industry in Lyon.
