FILM FESTIVAL CANNES 2025
Film & Media
Cannes, France
13-24 May 2025
The pinnacle event of the film industry
The Cannes Festival, or Film Festival Cannes as it’s better known in the wider world or Festival de Cannes in French, needs no introduction. The festival has been an indelible part of film history and the film industry, but beyond that has been a massive cultural phenomenon. No other festival captures the imagination and interest within professional circles and the cultural discourse than the Film Festival Cannes. The Red Carpet is a generator of headlines alone, as the most famous film stars showcase their fashion and promote their latest prestige releases. The festival was first introduced in 1946 and for over 70 years has been dictating film taste with an ever-growing impact. After all, it’s not coincidental that the Cannes Film Festival is selective about who visits. One of the big moments of the film festival is the professional platform for producers and filmmakers – Marché du Film.

The beauty of Film Festival Cannes lies within its scope and breadth. Today, it’s a massive event that runs for a total of twelve days and features so many screenings and separate smaller events in its program. The festival is held every single year during May and takes place within the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes, France. Open to industry insiders only, the Cannes Festival adds another layer of exclusivity by admitting guests only with invitations. The twelve days have varying schedules with midnight screenings and much more, so consult with the event program accordingly. The festival is run by its own governing body called French Association of the Film Festival. Palais des Festivals et des Congrès enjoys a central location in Cannes and is right by the shore, so it can be accessed by train, plane, boat and even helicopter.
- On the business side of things, there’s the Marché du Film – the first ever platform for the business of film and a major forum for the exchange of ideas as well as a place to make deals and secure distribution. There’s no better networking tool within film on such a big scale than Marché du Film;
- International Critics’ Week is another excellent initiative that has been in effect since 1962 and places its focus on talent sourcing. What this translates to is the screening of the first two feature films by up-and-coming directs regardless of country of origin;
- Cannes Festival also hosts a special exhibition, which might centre on a specific artist, a body of work or cinematographic theme and in turn, it adds another dimension to the overall program at the festival.
It’s hard to exactly calculate the attendance at Film Festival Cannes, considering how many parts make up the whole over a course of almost two weeks. In addition to the major portion, along with the award ceremonies and the official screenings, there are also public screenings on the beach of Macé as part of Cinéma de la Plage. However, one event within the broader festival program at the festival keeps detailed attendance records and we will use that to give you a taste of the visitor numbers. That event is, of course, Marché du Film – the main business centre for professionals. It is certainly a popular draw, as it registered an overall attendance of more than 12,000 visitors. In that number, we have to highlight the 1743 buyers who represented 5508 companies in total. These numbers only scratch the surface.
