Barcelona is one of the pioneering and fastest growing markets for the Internet services industry in Europe, and it maintains its leadership position in the telecommunications tech sector with one of the most important events in the world, the Mobile World Congress (MWC). No other event has become as relevant for the issues and opportunities surrounding connectivity than WMC. The conference draws industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators from across the globe. The 2024 edition was particularly noteworthy, as MWC 2024 contributed €502 million to Barcelona's economy. Since 2006, the cumulative economic impact of the event has reached €6.3 billion. MWC Barcelona 2024 welcomed over 101,000 attendees from 205 countries and territories. This flood of visitors brought significant financial benefits to the city, with the €502 million generated in 2024 marking the highest economic impact in the event's history. Barcelona’s Internet services industry was the main beneficiary, but the event created 9,200 part-time jobs in the city, a slight increase from 2023. Since MWC first arrived in Barcelona, it has been responsible for generating over 160,000 part-time jobs across Catalonia. MWC Barcelona has established itself not only as a space for industry leaders to showcase their latest innovations but also as a critical forum for global discussions on digital policy. The GSMA’s Ministerial Programme, a key part of the event, brought together over 180 delegations from 140 countries, including intergovernmental organisations, ministers, heads of state and regulatory authorities. These high-level discussions ensure that MWC plays a vital role in shaping the future of the digital economy. In terms of industry representation, over 2,700 exhibitors, sponsors and partners participated in the event, with more than 59% of attendees coming from industries adjacent to the core mobile sector, including technology, media, and finance.
