Exhibitions in Homberg, Germany for Building & Construction

In the heart of Duisburg, once a mining haven with a rich history dating back to 1889, is located the Rheinpreußensiedlung. Comprising 1,800 houses originally built for miners and their families, this historic settlement that takes over portions of the Homberg district underwent a remarkable transformation, spearheaded by the local residents’ association. Purchased by the association in 1985, these houses, initially owned by the Rheinpreußen mine, were in a state of neglect. A lack of investment over two decades had left the buildings in dire need of attention. The association faced the colossal task of rejuvenating this aging infrastructure while keeping the spirit of community intact. Tasked by the City of Duisburg with modernizing the Rheinpreußensiedlung in alignment with redevelopment goals, the association embarked on a journey with no initial capital. The intricate challenge lay in modernizing inhabited flats so that there were minimal disruptions for residents, particularly the elderly. While architectural constraints limited adaptations for wheelchair access, the association introduced a groundbreaking Social Construction Management system. This comprehensive approach involved two full-time employees and dedicated elderly residents who played pivotal roles in navigating the complexities of the modernization process. The Social Construction Management went beyond logistical coordination. It became a lifeline for elderly residents during the modernization as it provided counseling, information dissemination and customized solutions. The members of this management system collaborated closely with architects, craftsmen and helpers in order to ensure a seamless integration of technical advice and financial support for adaptation measures. Thanks to the guidance of the Social Construction Management, all flats underwent modernization without having to displace elderly residents. The success of this venture not only revitalized Rheinpreußensiedlung but also stands as a beacon of inspiration for communities seeking to balance heritage preservation with modernization. It was a triumph for the local building and construction industry in Homberg.
