The entire eyewear industry concentrates in Milan, when MIDO arrives. The show reveals the future of designer eyewear across seven sprawling pavilions, which showcased more than 1,200 exhibitors and attracted approximately 40,000 visitors in 2024. The latest edition marked an 11% increase in attendance compared to the previous year. The influx of attendees from 160 countries included significant participation from Asia, the US, and Europe. MIDO serves as a crucial platform for global industry players, facilitating not only business deals and networking but also fostering cultural exchanges and dialogues about the sector’s future. Among the highlights was the prominent presence of 3D printing technology. For the first time, two companies showcased 3D printers capable of producing eyewear products. Sisma, an Italian manufacturer of laser hardware for the jewelry industry, presented its MySint 3D printers, while Materialise demonstrated a groundbreaking in-store platform that integrates their Eyewear Fitting Suite. Materialise's innovative service allows eyewear shops to offer personalized fittings through an in-store app that scans customers' faces to create anatomically exact 3D models. Customers can then select frame designs from a digital catalog, view a virtual fit from all directions, and order bespoke frames produced on-demand. This market-ready technology promises to revolutionize the eyewear shopping experience globally. Sustainability and inclusivity were central themes at MIDO 2024. The CSE program promoted sustainable practices within the industry, highlighting products that use recycled materials, reduce production and distribution consumption, enhance supply chains, eliminate waste, and utilize renewable energy sources. Austrian company ROLF received the prestigious CSE AWARD for its innovative use of sustainable materials and processes in eyewear production. The Empowering Optical Women Leadership Program fostered leadership opportunities for women in optical fields. Additionally, discussions on medical advancements, including treatments for myopia and presbyopia, complemented the business portion of the event with the focus on health.
