The UAE's health industry is quickly asserting itself as a regional leader in quality of healthcare services as well as innovation. Building on its advanced infrastructure, the country is expanding its capabilities in clinical research, manufacturing, and medical-grade logistics. This transformation is central to the UAE’s broader ambitions, which include becoming a desired destination for medical tourism and specialized treatments not readily available elsewhere in the region. The foundation of the UAE’s healthcare success lies in its world-class infrastructure, which includes globally renowned institutions like Cleveland Clinic and Mayo Clinic. These collaborations have elevated the quality of care and attracted patients from across the region, making the UAE a top destination for complex medical procedures. The country’s healthcare facilities are designed to meet the diverse needs of its growing population, which now stands at approximately 11 million. The UAE is also responding proactively to the growing prevalence of lifestyle diseases, such as obesity and diabetes. According to the World Health Organization, a third of adults in the UAE are obese, and one in five people live with diabetes or pre-diabetes. These statistics have prompted the government to invest heavily in healthcare infrastructure that can cater to the increasing demand for high-quality medical services. This focus on health is supported by the UAE’s relatively high income levels, which further drive demand for top-tier healthcare. Government spending is a key driver of growth in the UAE’s medical sector. Public spending accounts for over two-thirds of overall healthcare expenditure, reflecting the government’s dedication to enhancing the sector. In the 2022 federal budget, $17.18 billion was allocated for public spending, with 7.6% earmarked for healthcare. In addition to federal initiatives, healthcare budgets are managed at the emirate level by the Dubai Health Authority and the Abu Dhabi Department of Health, ensuring a coordinated approach to healthcare development across the country.
