Exhibitions in Spain for Printing

Spain’s printing industry, the fifth largest in Europe, has had to contend with choppy waters as it overcomes uncertainty and transformation following the economic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Like many other industries, printing faced a severe downturn during the height of the crisis, and while some recovery has been noted, lingering challenges remain. During the peak of the pandemic in April 2020, Spain’s printing industry experienced an unprecedented collapse in production volumes. Production dropped to just 34% of its 2015 average—a stark contrast to the broader EU, where the decline was around 31%. This drop of nearly 60% below pre-pandemic levels made Spain’s printing sector one of the hardest-hit in Europe, largely due to the country’s strict lockdown measures and the economic downturn that followed. A short-lived recovery between May and July 2020 suggested some optimism, but by November of the same year, production levels were still about 10% below pre-pandemic figures. As Spain entered another wave of lockdowns, the industry experienced further setbacks, with production in early 2021 still 20% below pre-pandemic levels—lagging behind most European counterparts. The overall impact on the sector was substantial, with printing production in 2020 declining by approximately 18% compared to 2019. Revenue losses for the year were estimated at around 15%, even with slight price increases in the industry. While the pandemic accelerated existing trends, Spain’s printing industry had already been experiencing a gradual decline due to the rise of digital media. The demand for traditional print products, such as newspapers and magazines, has been shrinking, pushing companies to diversify their offerings. Some businesses have shifted their focus toward digital printing, packaging solutions, and specialty printing services to remain competitive in an evolving market. The lack of tourism has also contributed to weaker demand for printed advertising materials, brochures, and travel-related publications.
