Berlin’s financial and banking sectors have entered a new era as the city emerges as a FinTech powerhouse of global proportions. It's not just reshaping the financial landscape; it's influencing the financial future, which can be best described in a single word – digital. Berlin has long held a significant place in the world of finance. Large banks, savings banks, investors, stock exchanges, funds and insurance companies have established their presence in the capital. Additionally, central organizations that oversee the financial sector have set up shop in Berlin. So it’s only natural that Berlin is where the digital financial industry of tomorrow is taking shape. Berlin proudly boasts its status as the leading FinTech ecosystem in Germany and Europe. Of the approximately 900 FinTech companies in Germany, more than 300 call Berlin home. In 2021, six out of seven German FinTech unicorns were born in the capital. The FinTech sector is in a state of rapid evolution and increasingly serves as an economic powerhouse and job creator in Berlin. The burgeoning ecosystem has been a magnet for top talent, attracting skilled professionals from far and wide. Substantial investments and impressive venture capital rounds have injected fresh capital into the sector. In 2021 alone, investments in Berlin's FinTechs reached an impressive total of €3.8 billion. Two key initiatives, the de:hub FinTech Berlin and the Berlin Finance Initiative (BFI), have taken the expansion of and connection within the Berlin FinTech ecosystem to a whole new level. They champion the innovative potential of FinTech players and address vital topics for the region, including diversity, sustainability and workforce development. Together, these initiatives offer a diverse array of events, programs, and publications that are all focused on nurturing and growing the FinTech sector in Berlin. This digital trajectory falls in step with Germany’s overall pivot to a greener finance and banking sectors.
