Exhibitions in Hamburg, Germany for Shipping

Hamburg has reaffirmed its position as a major player in the global maritime industry, climbing to eighth place in the newly released Leading Maritime Cities (LMC) Report 2024, which evaluates cities across five key categories: shipping centres, maritime finance and law, maritime technology, port and logistics, and overall attractiveness and competitiveness. Hamburg’s strong showing reflects its growing influence in all areas of the maritime economy and its strategic investments in sustainable shipping. Home to over 100 shipping companies, Hamburg is a nerve centre for international shipping operations. Industry giants like Hapag-Lloyd in the container segment and Oldendorff Carriers in bulk transport represent the city’s strength across shipping sub-sectors. The city’s forward-thinking approach to sustainability has also earned praise, particularly for its alternative fuel strategy. In line with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) goal of eliminating greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by 2050, Hamburg-based companies are rapidly adopting engines powered by LNG, LPG, ammonia, and methanol. With over one million gross registered tonnes (GT) of alternative fuel-capable vessels, Hamburg ranks alongside Singapore, trailing only Athens and Tokyo in terms of low-carbon fleet tonnage. Hamburg’s shipping industry wouldn’t be where it is today without the benefit of being in the Maritime Cluster Northern Germany (MCN), which fosters innovation and collaboration across the region’s diverse maritime sectors. From shipbuilding and engineering to offshore operations and ocean technology, MCN acts as a hub for cross-industry engagement and promotes technological advancement throughout the value chain. The role of the maritime industry in Northern Germany has long been integral to the region’s economy, and in Hamburg, it continues to evolve as both a traditional strength and a future-facing growth sector. Through its investment in infrastructure, innovation, and green technologies, Hamburg ensures it will continue its legacy and be an active participant in writing shipping’s next chapter.
