Munich has established a serious reputation as a technological center in Germany and amongst its many achievements is the cutting-edge aerospace sector it’s managed to cultivate over the years. The region's dynamic landscape boasts a number of companies and research institutions dedicated to aeronautics, aerospace technology and satellite navigation. This rich cluster covers the entire spectrum of aerospace endeavors. Home to the Munich Airport, which has clinched the title of the best airport in Europe 10 times, Munich proudly holds the distinction of having Germany's second-largest airport. It's a gateway for both national and international travelers and a big contributing factor to Munich’s position as an aviation hub. Aside from commercial aviation, the city is home to The German Aerospace Center (DLR), which has a substantial presence in the region, featuring nine scientific institutes at the Oberpfaffenhofen site located in close proximity to Munich. These institutes serve as valuable meeting points for all manner of aerospace researchers, who pioneer advancements that go on to have a global impact. One player in Munich’s aerospace industry is the Columbus Operations Center of the DLR. This center's legacy includes the accompaniment of the Columbia space shuttle mission, demonstrating Munich’s role in international space exploration. Today, it plays a pivotal role in supporting the European research laboratory on the International Space Station (ISS). As researchers orbit high above the Earth within the ISS, Munich's finest minds are hard at work on the ground. The Columbus Control Centre at DLR's Oberpfaffenhofen facility orchestrates vital operations, ensuring the ISS continues to be a cradle of scientific discovery. All this goes to show that Munich has incredible value to Germany’s aerospace ambitions. The city, in fact, is the biggest cluster with over 32 major companies operating on its territory and in its vicinity.
