Conversations around energy efficiency and less of a reliance on fossil fuels are going to find tangible and actionable strategies going ahead within Italy’s heating industry. In 2023, the Italian National Team hosted an online workshop in conjunction with the Executive Committee meeting of HPT TCP by IEA. Global experts gathered to explore the latest trends in the heating industry, spanning market dynamics, policy evolution and cutting-edge research. More than 40 participants from 17 countries shed light on Italy’s pivotal role in shaping the future of heating technologies. Federico Musazzi, the Secretary-General of Assoclima, the Italian Association of Heating, Cooling and Ventilation System Manufacturers, took center stage with a presentation highlighting the European Commission’s internal review of Directive 2018/2001. The directive aims to enhance the cost-effective integration of renewable energy sources, aligning with the Climate Target Plan’s goal of a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. Musazzi stressed the significance of promoting renewable energy in buildings, considering that buildings contribute to 40% of total energy consumption in Europe. Roberto Nidasio, representing the Comitato Termotecnico Italiano (CTI), delved into the crucial role of heat pumps in enhancing the energy efficiency of buildings. Nidasio emphasized the need for accurate assessments of heat pumps’ energy performance within the context of building energy efficiency. He highlighted two essential types of standards: product standards and system standards – crucial for evaluating the energy performance of heat pumps effectively. Marco Buoni, President of the Air Conditioning and Refrigeration European Association (AREA), focused on the servicing industry’s importance in heating and cooling. Buoni stressed that heat pumps, heating and cooling are integral to Italy and Europe's decarbonization plans. Given that the industry’s energy consumption ranges from 20% to 25% of total electricity, the government has initiated legislative measures to enhance energy efficiency and mitigate environmental impact.
